Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know Wednesday morning

1. The Defence Headquarters on Tuesday announced the killing of 175 ISIS terrorists in ongoing joint counterterrorism operations conducted by Nigerian troops and the United States Africa Command in Northeast Nigeria. The military high command said the coordinated operations, which commenced a few days ago, have continued to record significant successes against ISIS and ISWAP elements operating in the region.

2. Vice-President Kashim Shettima said on Tuesday that some people attempted to create bad blood between him and President Bola Tinubu three months after their inauguration, warning his principal to stop wearing traditional attire he gave him during the 2023 campaign. Shettima said those behind the plot claim that the garments were laced charms to kill the president.

3. The Federal Government, on Tuesday, disclosed that it will not close the Eko Bridge in Lagos State, as it had earlier planned. The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, made the disclosure during an inspection of the bridge.

4. The Naira on Tuesday appreciated to N1,385 per dollar in the parallel market from N1,395 per dollar on Monday. But the local currency depreciated to N1,373.65 per dollar in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market,  NFEM .

5. Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, faction led by Kabiru Turaki, SAN, yesterday granted former President Goodluck Jonathan a waiver from its presidential screening process, ahead of the 2027 election, as party officials confirmed he was currently the party’s only presidential aspirant. The party said there was no need to screen Jonathan, given the positions he had previously held.

6. Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress in Gombe State, has pulled out of the race to govern the state under the ruling party. The former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, who rejected the consensus arrangement that led to the choice of Jamilu Gwamna, had earlier vowed to challenge what he described as injustice in the party.

7. More aspirants vying for Senate tickets of the All Progressives Congress have rejected the outcome of the primaries in their various constituencies, vowing to take their grievances to the national secretariat of the party for resolution. More than 10 aspirants across the states have publicly rejected the result of the primaries insisting that the processes were marred by irregularities.

8. Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have clamped down on a former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman. Mamman, who has remained in hiding even after he was sentenced to 75 years imprisonment, was arrested in Rigasa, Kaduna State.

9. Arsenal Football Club were crowned English Premier League champions on Tuesday for the first time in 22 years after Manchester City drew 1-1 at Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium. Pep Guardiola’s men needed to win on England’s south coast to keep the title race alive but fell short.

10. The Police Command in Akwa Ibom says it rescued two women from an irate mob, who stripped, brutally assaulted, and attempted to subject them to unlawful execution. The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Timfom John, disclosed this in a statement in Uyo on Tuesday. John said the command received a distress call from a commissioner in the state, who witnessed the incident on his way to the office.
