Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know Saturday morning

1. The 2026 National Convention of the All Progressives Congress, APC, kicked off on Friday night at the Eagle Square venue, Abuja, with the arrival of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The President arrived the venue at about 8:10 p.m., nearly three hours behind his scheduled time, according to the official programme.

2. Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, on Friday, resigned from his position. This was announced in a statement by Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, spokesman of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, citing “recent circumstances” that constrained the deputy governor’s ability to fulfill his duties effectively.

3. Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, mother of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has passed away. Her death was announced on Friday by her grandson in a post on Facebook.

4. The West African Examinations Council on Friday released the results of the 2026 First Series Computer-Based WASSCE for Private Candidates, confirming improved performance and increased nationwide participation in the examination. The examination was conducted across Nigeria from January 28 to February 14, while coordination and marking of scripts took place between Feb. 26 and March 13.

5. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday extended the deadline for political parties to submit the e-copy of their membership register from April 21 to May 10. The commission also said that political parties are free to fix the party primaries between April 23 and May 30th May, adding that the parties must submit their register to the commission 21 days before the primaries.

6. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has released Malam Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State. El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since February 19, 2026.

7. Many delegates and journalists were on Friday prevented from accessing Eagle Square, venue of the ongoing 8th National Convention of the All Progressives Congress, APC. ​Many journalists were denied entry tags, leaving them stranded.

8. Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress commended President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda, while calling for greater unity and discipline within the party to strengthen its position ahead of future elections. Chairman of the APC Progressives Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma said on behalf of their colleagues on Friday at the party’s 8th National Convention that Tinubu’s reforms are delivering positive results.

9. Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has clarified that it has not announced any Initial Public Offering for its listing, warning the public against relying on speculative reports circulating across media and social platforms. In a statement issued by its management, the company said it had observed the “recent circulation of unauthorised information across various media and social platforms regarding a potential Initial Public Offering”.

10. The community of Kogi State Polytechnic has again been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of a lecturer, Mr. Anslem Ojodomo. ‎Mr Ojodomo’s death comes just a month after another lecturer, Dr. Barnabas Akuba, died in February shortly after completing his PhD programme.
