1. President Bola Tinubu on Monday directed the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC to investigate major global technology companies and Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms over allegations of anti-competitive practices and the unlawful use of content belonging to Nigerian media organisations.
2. Former Borno State Governor and All Progressives Congress chieftain, Ali Modu Sheriff, has said Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, would not secure the support of Northern voters in the 2027 presidential election. Sheriff stated this on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television, where he also defended President Bola Tinubu’s handling of the country’s security challenges.
3. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has held a closed-door meeting with Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, and former governor, Senator Gabriel Suswam, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The meeting followed the impasse surrounding the outcome of the All Progressives Congress, APC primaries in Benue State.
4. The Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, OAGF, has disowned the claim that the disputed Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, PFIPC, opened an account with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. While responding to claims made by Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, the self-acclaimed Director-General of the PFIPC, the Presidency had said misled OAGF and opened a CBN account.
5. The Police have arrested the father and family friend of embattled Director-General of the purported Presidential Economic Advisory Council/Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, PFIPC, Adeyemi Adeniyi, in Osogbo, Oyo State. Adeniyi had gone into hiding, following revelations that he had allegedly scammed the Federal Government through the creation of a fake presidential council.
6. The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Adewale Adeniyi, said yesterday the federal government has reduced the import tariffs on used vehicles from 15 per cent to five and on brand-new vehicles from 20 per cent to 10. Adeniyi spoke when he appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Customs and Excise to defend the service’s 2026 budget proposal.
7. The Naira on Monday depreciated to N1,400 per dollar in the parallel market from N1,395 per dollar last weekend. Likewise, the naira depreciated to N1,371 per dollar in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market, NFEM.
8. At least 32 people have died and several others injured in multiple road crashes in Kwara, Kogi and Ogun states. The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC confirmed the accidents, which occurred between Sunday and Monday.
9. A Nigerian medical graduate, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died from injuries she sustained during a Russian airstrike on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, days after doctors in Ukraine and Germany battled unsuccessfully to save her life. The death was announced on Monday in a statement published on the Facebook page of the Kharkiv National Medical University, where Marian studied medicine.
10. United Bank for Africa Plc has announced that its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, will retire from the Board of Directors of UBA on August 21, 2026. The decision follows the completion of the 12-year tenure limit prescribed for non-executive directors of banks by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
