Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know Thursday morning

‎1. The World Bank has called on Nigeria to ensure that the positive outcomes from its recent macroeconomic reforms translate into real improvements in citizens’ living standards, as new estimates show that about 139 million Nigerians are living in poverty. Country Director for Nigeria, Mathew Verghis, made the call on Wednesday.

2. Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued 37 kidnapped hostages following major breakthroughs in the fight against terrorism, kidnapping and organised crime. Military sources said the coordinated land and joint operations led to the killing of nine terrorists, the arrest of eight criminal suspects, and the recovery of a cache of weapons.

3. The Naira on Wednesday appreciated to N1,490 per dollar in the parallel market from N1,495 per dollar on Tuesday. Likewise, the Naira appreciated to N1,469 per dollar in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM).

4. President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio and the Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, were on Wednesday locked in a war of words over the frequent defection of senators from the opposition political parties to the All Progressives Congress, APC. While Akpabio slammed oppositions for lack of organisation, which has paved the way for defection, Moro challenged him, saying that no matter the number of senators present, they are capable of holding their own.

5. Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will win re-election in 2027, insisting that no opposition figure, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, or Labour Party’s Peter Obi, can defeat him. He spoke during an interview on Channels TV.

6. The Police have suspended the enforcement of the tinted glass permit after being served a court order. Spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, Josephine Adeh, stated this during an interview on a national television.

7. The International Criminal Police Organisation has confirmed the arrest of a wanted Nigerian, identified as Ikechukwu N., by the Argentine authorities. INTERPOL, in an update on its X handle on Tuesday, disclosed that Ikechukwu had been on its wanted list for allegedly orchestrating multiple romance scams involving thousands of women.

8. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike has frowned at arbitrary street naming in the FCT. He specifically warned the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, Christopher Maikalangu, to desist from unauthorised naming of streets and roads constructed by the FCT Administration.

9. An Ikeja Special Offences Court has adjourned until Oct. 9 to rule on the admissibility of digital evidence presented by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. Justice Rahman Oshodi reserved the date after hearing arguments from both sides on the authenticity and certification of documents extracted from a former executive assistant to Emefiele.

10. A Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday granted a week’s extension to the medical panel set up by the President of the Nigerian Medical Association to assess the health status of detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. The extension of time became necessary owing to the panel’s inability to conclude its assignment within the eight days allocated to it by the court.
