1. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday appointed new Service Chiefs following the sack of Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa as the Chief of Defence Staff and some others. In a statement issued on Friday by Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Musa was replaced by Lieutenant-General Olufemi Oluyede, who until the new appointment was Chief of Army Staff.
2. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says he rejected a suggestion to back former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, as his successor at the end of his tenure in 2007. Obasanjo disclosed this yesterday during the second edition of the Ajibosin Platform Annual Symposium in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
3. The Mandate Secretary of Health, Human and Environment Services, Adedolapo Fasawe, on Friday disclosed that the Federal Capital Territory Executive Council has ratified a contract for the purchase of 12 new emergency ambulances at the cost of N1.74 billion to aid emergency responses. Fasawe said this after a meeting of the FCT Executive Council at the FCT Minister’s official residenc.
4. A Federal High Court in Abuja has threatened to invoke its powers “to make the necessary orders” should the detained leader of separatist group Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, fail to utilise the opportunity accorded him to conduct his defence in the terrorism charges against him. Justice James Omotosho said this while adjourning further hearing in Kanu’s terrorism trial till October 27.
5. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, yesterday warned the Peoples Democratic Party governors that their strategy of excluding him from key party decisions will lead to the party’s collapse. Wike, who gave the warning at a monthly live media parley monitored by our correspondent in Abuja, expressed his frustration at being sidelined from major consultations despite his long-standing influence in the party.
6. The African Democratic Congress, ADC has asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to be honest with Nigerians on the real reasons behind the “sudden and rather abrupt change in the leadership of the Nigerian military”. In a statement, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, said the party was concerned that the change happened after the rumoured coup plot.
7. Bishop Emeritus of the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, Most Rev. Julius Adelakun, is dead. A statement on Saturday by the Bishop of Oyo Catholic Archdiocese, Most Rev. Emmanuel Badejo, indicated that Adelakun died on Friday at the age of 91 years. Adelakun served as Bishop of Oyo for 36 years from April 13, 1973 till retirement on November 4, 2009.
8. Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, has approved the appointment of key officials to head critical agencies in the state. The governor approved the appointment of Abba Junaidu as Chairman of the Katsina State Road Maintenance Agency. This is contained in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ibrahim Mohamed and made available to newsmen late Friday.
9. Six members of the National Youth Service Corps have sued the Anambra State Government, demanding N1bn in damages over their alleged assault and unlawful detention by operatives of the state vigilante group, Agunechemba. The corps members — Jennifer Elohor, Greatness Oyeh, Eze Ikenna, Anighoro Godspower, Feyisara Amore, and Chimenum Wonodi — filed the suit before the Federal High Court in Awka.
10. Two more victims of the Niger State petrol tanker explosion have died, raising the death toll to 45, while 62 others are still receiving treatment for severe burns. Head of Operations, National Emergency Management Agency, Minna Office, Hussaini Isah, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, attributing the tragedy to the bad condition of the road.
