Security forces in Chad have arrested 18-year-old son of late Boko Haram founder, Mohammed Yusuf.
Zagazola Makama confirmed that the young militant, identified as Abdrahman Yusuf, was reportedly apprehended along with five other jihadists during a coordinated operation by Chadian security operatives.
Sources revealed he was leading a six-man terrorist cell linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a breakaway faction of Boko Haram.
Images obtained by Zagazola showed a short, slender youth clad in a blue tracksuit, bearing a notable resemblance to his father, standing among a group of visibly older detainees.
Intelligence sources disclosed that Abdrahman is the younger brother of ISWAP’s current leader, Habib Yusuf, also known as Abu Mus’ab Al-Barnawi. While Chadian authorities confirmed the arrest of six suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP members, they refrained from releasing specific details regarding their identities.
Mohammed Yusuf, the founder of Boko Haram, was captured by Nigerian forces and later killed in police custody in Maiduguri on July 30, 2009. His son, reportedly born in Nigeria before the insurgency intensified, is believed to have been indoctrinated into extremism from an early age.
He has recently risen within ISWAP ranks, emerging as a field commander within the Lake Chad region.
“He and his team were arrested by Chadian security forces. They are six in total. He was the head of the cell,” a source confirmed.
The arrest is being hailed as a significant step forward in the ongoing regional campaign to dismantle extremist cells operating throughout the Lake Chad Basin.
