Nigerians threaten to boycott Erisco products over prosecution of reviewer, Chioma Okoli

Nigerians have threatened to boycott Erisco Foods over the company’s continued persecution of a reviewer, Chioma Okoli.

Recall that in September last year, the Chief Executive Officer of Erisco Foods threatened to slam Okoli with a N5 billion lawsuit over her negative review of the company’s Tomato Paste.

Okoli had stirred controversy when she posted a negative review on Erisco Tomato Paste.

However, Eric vowed on Arise Television that he would continue the persecution of Okoli despite confirming her apologies.

Okoli was seen weeping profusely over the company’s suit against her in a trending video.

According to details shared by Okoli’s lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, the subsequent development saw the Inspector General of Police filing a “cybercrime” charge against Chioma.

Effiong disclosed that they appeared at the Federal High Court, Abuja on Thursday, February 29, 2024, to address the charge.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, Nigerians took to their X account, calling for a boycott of Erisco foods.

A popular Nigerian activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, wrote: “Erisco is oppressive, thin-skinned, insensitive, and thoroughly irresponsible in its response. She may have been wrong, but you have made an unforgettable error with your over-the-top reactions. With power comes responsibility, but you have power devoid of responsibility”.

@docomeiza:

Because of how Chioma Okoli is being treated, I will not buy anything Erisco Foods Limited made.

For me, the brand is now associated with oppression and bullying. My right, my choice.

@iamthatnaijaguy:

Someone made an honest review of a product she used. A power-drunk billionaire decided he’d bully his customer.

This madness can only happen in a lawless country like Nigeria.

Every reasonable Nigerian must cancel Erisco. Don’t buy Nagiko tomatoes, and Don’t buy Erisco products.

@nyanyelugo13:

Dear Erisco Food,

What you are doing to Chioma is bullying; in her tweet, there is nowhere it said that your product is bad. In review, people can give you one star, go to the Google Store and see it.

All she did was ask honest questions.

You are doing this because it is Nigeria anyway.
