Residents accuse Yobe LG chair of land-grabbing

Some residents of the Ngalda community in Yobe State have accused the Chairperson of the Caretaker Management Committee of the Fika Local Government Area of land-grabbing.

Findings showed that the landowners who made the accusations were mostly those whom the local government’s authority accused of selling prohibited items such as alcohol as well as operating illegal brothels in the community.

One of the victims, identified as Mr. Mamman Zakar, stated, “I legitimately bought my house, but it was destroyed during a crackdown on local brothels and joints by the local government authorities.

“To make matters worse, the lands of our destroyed houses were allocated to the political associates of the LG chair.”

Mr Zakar is demanding compensation to enable him to acquire another house for his family.

Joy Worry and Blessing Emmanuel also alleged that their houses were destroyed by the council’s authorities without compensation.

In response to the allegations, the Fika LG Chairperson, Hajia Halima Kyari Joda, denied the accusations.

She said, “It is not true because the local government council will build a hospital in the location for the benefit of our people.”

Recal that the LG authorities, led by the Chairperson, had arrested and prosecuted 92 persons, as well as shut down 39 local joints and brothels where suspected criminals are hiding in the community.
